“The night before [the first breakfast program in Chicago] was supposed to open,” a female Panther told historian Nik Heynan, “the Chicago police broke into the church and mashed up all the food and urinated on it.” – Erin Blakemore

The Free Breakfast for School Children Program was a community-based program by the Black Panther Party. The Panthers would cook and serve food to the poor inner city youth of the area . Starting in Oakland, California in 1969, the free breakfast program would grow to feed more than 10,000 children every morning before school.

During the entire opening weekend of ‘ICONIC: Black Panther’ exhibition, a food drive will be hosted by the Black Panther Party at the Stony Island Arts Bank. A suggested donation of $5 is also recommended. All funds will go to political prisoners and the movement towards justice.

In cohesion with the ICONIC: Black Panther exhibition, SEPIA Collective and Rebuild Foundation presents ‘Free Breakfast for Community [with Black Panthers]’: a community based breakfast event that welcomes to eat with Chicago Black Panthers.

Following the breakfast, hang around the Stony Island Arts Bank to listen to a live set by DJ Duane Powell, socialize with Panthers and grab a signed poster.
