I am pleased that an agreement has been finalized to keep Mercy Hospital’s doors open. Under the new agreement, Mercy will remain as a full-service, acute care community hospital under the ownership of the not-for-profit Insight Chicago.
This is a win for 5th District residents on the South Side and all of Chicago, as we reversed the trend that has seen too many hospital closings in Black and Brown neighborhoods. I am proud that our community demonstrated heart, grit, and unwavering resilience that resulted in this victory.
I thank each and every one of you. Your drive and commitment remind me that standing up for what you believe in still matters and can pay off for the betterment of everyone who calls Chicago home.
Without your work, we would have seen this essential institution close, which would have exacerbated the health care challenges the community already endures and have only been made worse by the COVID pandemic.
Together, the residents of the 5th District and our neighboring communities who saved the hospital must now hold Insight accountable to ensure that Mercy provides quality health care, is restored to the full-service facility that it once was and expands its health services onsite and throughout the area.
