Teachers, Nurses, Labor Leaders, Elected Officials and a Growing list of Chicago Orgs Call On Lightfoot to Bring End to Hunger Strike, Deny Permit Despite 12th Day of Hunger Strike to Stop General Iron, Lightfoot Admin has Yet to Say Permit Denial
Teachers and students from George Washington High School will bring together labor leaders, elected officials, and community organizations to call on the Lightfoot administration to end the hunger strike and deny General Iron’s permit.
Members of the South East Educators for Environmental Justice and George Washington High School Students, along with other organizations across Chicago, will be observing a day of fasting in solidarity with the hunger strikers that will on the 12th day of their strike.
The Lightfoot administration can either deny or issue a draft permit at any time. Despite the growing calls from elected officials and community leaders to deny the permit and end the hunger strike, the mayor has yet to indicate a willingness to consider a denial of General Iron’s final permit.
The construction of the Southeast Side facility in a mostly Latino and Black neighborhood is almost complete and residents are concerned that the final permit needed to operate the facility will be rubber stamped.
