A Chicago Police Department in crisis will be the focus of a City Council committee meeting Tuesday. Action is expected in the investigation into the 2014 shooting death of Laquan McDonald.
There have been several calls in the community for a public hearing on the Laquan McDonald case. Dash-cam video shows Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old McDonald 16 times as the teen appeared to be walking away.
The Joint Committee on Public Safety and Human Relations is also expected to discuss appointing a special prosecutor to represent Cook County in the murder case against Van Dyke.
Protests over the city’s handling of the McDonald case spread to New York City Monday night. Several protesters staged a demonstration in Grand Central Station. They moved near the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, where they scuffled with police and were arrested.
Several aldermen with the Latino caucus plan to hold a news conference Tuesday. They will be talking about reforms within the police department.
