Concerned Citizens to Keep the South Chicago YMCA
The announced closing of the South Chicago YMCA at 91st and Houston has the potential of impacting the future growth and revitalization of our community and could set back the wellness of many of our seniors, families, and youth. The YMCA has been an important staple in this community for over 90 years. Planned and structured disinvestment continues to destroy the very fabric, culture, and vibrancy of our community. The loss of YMCA programs effectively serves to undermine the revitalization of the South-East Region (South Shore, South Chicago, Calumet Heights, South Deering, South East Side and Hegewisch). The unintended consequence of closing the YMCA is to drive another stake in the heart and soul of the area and its residents and to open the door to further disinvestment and displacement.
