Alderwoman Garza, 10th Ward stood alongside my fellow colleagues, Illinois PIRG, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, The Illinois Environmental Council, Chicago Recycling Coalition, and Alliance for the Great Lakes to introduce the Plastic Free Water Ordinance, which aims to ban foam food containers and limit single use plastics in Chicago.
The 10th Ward is home to 9 landfills, some of which hold thousands of pounds of single use and non biodegradable plastics. Not only does this plastic pollute our lands, but it also pollutes our water.
Today’s “throwaway culture” and excessive use of single use plastics is unsustainable and has proven to have harmful effects on our environment. We can all do our part to reduce the millions of pounds of plastic trash that makes it way into our lakes, rivers, and oceans and ensure a sustainable future for all.
