Gov. Rauner has now issued 70 of the 81 medical cannabis business licenses. The Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program is now one step closer on the path for providing medicine to patients. This program is not perfect but it has moved the conversation about ending cannabis prohibition in Illinois to the next level. At this time we are still confident that we can get a legalization bill introduced this year and a decriminalization bill has already been introduced (HB 218). There is a good chance that the decrim bill will pass this year with some effort but it is important that we keep our message loud and clear that we want cannabis to be legal for all adults to grow and consume responsibly!
If half the people on our email list took 5 minutes to make two phone calls, one call to their State Senator and then another to their State Representative every week until June, we would have over 4,000 calls going to lawmakers every week on our issue. The Capitol switchboard operator can connect you to your State Senator and State Representative, call 217-782-2000 and ask to speak with your State Senator and State Rep. You can also find the contact information for your elected officials by entering your home address at this site
If we want cannabis to be legalized for all adults we need people to start making these calls every week and we need to encourage more people to join us on our lobby days at the Capitol in Springfield. Our lobby day last week had over 45 people attending, but we still need more people attending and especially making appointments to meet with their lawmakers, both in the district where they live and at the Capitol.
Plenty of people consume cannabis in Illinois but not very many of them want to be part of making history and re-legalizing this plant in Illinois. The time is now to make history and change this law so that Illinois residents can enjoy the same freedoms as those in Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
