[En Español abajo] On June 19, 2018, the Chicagoans for an End to the Gang Database, a coalition of individuals and community organizations, announced a new federal class action against the City of Chicago and Chicago Police Department (CPD), targeting CPD’s unconstitutional Gang Database, and urging City Council to take action.

On September 19, 2018, plaintiffs and defendants will appear in court where the judge will determine if this lawsuit will move forward.

The City and CPD want the Court to dismiss this lawsuit but the Chicagoans for an End to the Gang Database coalition are not backing down from exposing and holding the City and CPD accountable for the use of this racist tool.

CPD’s gang database is known to be used by Police to harass and falsely detain people. In addition, CPD provides its incorrect and inconsistent database to third parties, which can trigger further repercussions that can include job loss, denial of access to public housing and public education, inability to secure certain licensure, ineligibility for bond, and possible deportation.

Help us pack the court room on September 19th and echo the following demands by the Chicagoans for an End to the Gang Database

The City and Chicago Police Department must:

1. Stop the designation of people as gang members, affiliates or associates. Stop the use of the gang database.

2. Stop sharing the database with any third party, including other local police departments, criminal courts, housing agencies, federal public welfare programs, ICE and FBI.

3. Remove everyone under 18 years old from the database.

4. Remove all people who have been listed in the database for more than 5 years.

5. Conduct an audit of the database to determine its accuracy, if information is found to be unreliable, such data should be deleted.

6. Create an appeals process for all people to contest information found in the database.

7. CPD has to notify everyone that was added to the database in the last 20 years that their name is on the list. In addition, CPD has to let people know what agencies their information was shared with via access to the Gang Database

8. For anyone removed from the database CPD has to notify external agencies that information was incorrect

9. CPD has to make database public for all Chicagoans, such data such detail how CPD officers are using the gang database.
