Presented by HotHouse as part of the “On Whose Shoulders” series, exploring the legacy of CPUSA.
Presented by HotHouse as part of the “On Whose Shoulders” series, exploring the legacy of CPUSA. By the start of World War II, Paul Robeson had given up his lucrative mainstream work to participate in more socially progressive film and stage productions. Robeson committed his support to Paul Strand and Leo Hurwitz’s political semidocumentary Native Land. With Robeson’s narration and songs, this beautifully shot and edited film exposes violations of Americans’ civil liberties and is a call to action for exploited workers around the country. Scarcely shown since its debut, Native Land represents Robeson’s shift from narrative cinema to the leftist documentaries that would define the final chapter of his controversial film career. (Criterion Collection) About On Whose Shoulders: Acknowledging the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) “On Whose Shoulders” seeks to excavate the voices and political initiatives of the CPUSA from its foundational years- “The Red Century”. On Whose Shoulders takes particular interest in the cultivation of women and minority leadership development in an era before the civil rights campaigns that are most often in the spotlight. This series will be produced in multiple venues across Chicago in fall of 2019. It was organized by an ad hoc committee of scholars, community organizers and cultural workers under the direction of Marguerite Horberg for HotHouse. For more information, please visit hothouse.net.

Description
Then a Cunning Voice and A Night We Spend Gazing at Stars weaves together stories and performance with the exchange of ideas, the sharing of food, and the endurance of spending a night together outside under the stars and sky at Calumet Park. Beginning at dusk and continuing until after sunrise, and including supper, breakfast, and snacks, Then a Cunning Voice… invites audience members into a multilayered, participatory work that focuses attention on the space we share and on envisioning the future. Throughout the night, the audience will be guided through a series of richly crafted events—part ritual, part lyrical adventure—created by Johnson in collaboration with performers Tania Isaac and 14-year-old Georgia Lucas. The performance will begin with an opening ceremony and a group walk that arrives at the shores of Lake Michigan and unfolds on 4,000 square feet of quilts. Designed by textile artist Maggie Thompson, each quilt has been hand-made by volunteers at community sewing bees. The quilts serve as audience seating, performance area, resting area, and “home” for the duration. The night creates space for connection. It is celebratory, to come together like this. Join us around the campfire and under the stars. To register, please visit https://dance.colum.edu/emily-johnson

“Hip-Hop is a universal and global force. It’s actually America’s largest cultural export. Hip-Hop and street dance are an enormous economy all over the world right now with huge professional competition circuits like Juste Debout and Red Bull BC One, and performance platforms like Breakin’ Convetion in the UK. It’s even taken over the airwaves with shows like World of Dance, and it was just announced that breaking is going to be in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. While breaking and these other street dance forms have universal appeal, they all grew out of African American culture, and in particular were invented by African Diasporic youth in urban environments. The goal in partnering with Rebuild is to provide opportunities for Black youth in the surrounding communities to see and understand the inherent value in their cultural productions, to build not only self-worth, but to also see how that can translate into something tangible economically. And it’s also about getting others connected to and invested in the communities where these forms were birthed and continue to develop out of. As Black folks, we dance, that’s what we do. And it’s fun and social but we don’t necessarily see it as a pathway to sustain ourselves and our communities. So what we are doing is planting seeds that have the power to grow into whatever we can imagine for our lives and communities.” — Daniel “BRAVEMONK” Haywood (Phaze II/BraveSoul Movement)
